Sony Semiconductor and TSMC partner on next-generation image sensors, eyeing the physical AI field

Sony Semiconductor has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with TSMC to explore a joint venture at its new Kumamoto plant.

The partnership aims to combine Sony’s sensor design strengths with TSMC’s manufacturing expertise to develop next-generation image sensors.

Target applications include automotive and robotics, with a focus on the growing physical AI market.

Any future investment will be phased in based on demand and government support.
