More than just an SUV? Rivian is working on more R2 variants.

Rivian says its upcoming R2 electric SUV may get more variants, including a possible R2X performance trim.

CEO RJ Scaringe said the company is also exploring lidar sensors with a Chinese partner.

R2 production will start in Normal, Illinois, before shifting later to Rivian’s Georgia plant.

The Georgia factory, due in 2028, is also planned to build the R3 lineup and robotaxis for Uber.
