Detecting and preventing distillation attacks

Anthropic said DeepSeek, Moonshot, and MiniMax used fake accounts and proxy access to collect more than 16 million Claude exchanges.

The company says the activity was part of large-scale distillation campaigns aimed at extracting Claude’s capabilities to train their own systems.

Illicit distillation can weaken safety protections and enable cyberattacks, disinformation, surveillance, and other harmful uses.

The case highlights how unauthorized capability transfer can undermine export controls and raise national security concerns.
