US desert to host 500 MWh non-flammable sodium battery storage with passive cooling

Alsym Energy and Juniper Energy plan a 500 MWh sodium-ion battery storage rollout in California.

The deployment will begin in hot regions like the Mojave Desert, where passive cooling can improve performance and cut costs.

The non-flammable sodium-ion system is designed to reduce fire risk and avoid thermal runaway compared with lithium-ion batteries.

If successful, the project could offer safer, lower-cost grid storage for California’s clean-energy buildout.
