Archaeologists Discover Mysterious Artificial Island Older Than Stonehenge in Scotland

Archaeologists documented a 5,000-year-old artificial island, or crannog, in Loch Bhorgastail on the Isle of Lewis.

Using 3D photogrammetry, excavation, coring and radiocarbon dating, they found a timber-and-brushwood platform first built in the Neolithic.

Later Bronze Age and Iron Age changes show the site was reused and modified over centuries.

Neolithic pottery fragments nearby add to evidence of early prehistoric activity in Scottish lochs.
