WhatsApp is starting a limited beta rollout of usernames on Android and iOS.

The new feature adds a username field in profile settings and can keep phone numbers private in chats.

Users still need a phone number to register, but discovery and messaging will shift toward usernames.

WhatsApp is also testing username rules and an optional 4-digit username key for first contact.
