Astronomers Stunned by Ancient Galaxy With No Spin

JWST observations of XMM-VID1-2075 found a massive galaxy in the early universe with no measurable spin.

The galaxy had already stopped forming stars less than 2 billion years after the Big Bang and appears to be supported by random internal motion instead of rotation.

Reported in Nature Astronomy, the finding challenges standard ideas about how massive galaxies form and evolve so quickly.

Researchers say the result suggests mergers or other processes may reshape young galaxies faster than current models predict.
