There’s a Long-Shot Proposal to Protect California Workers From AI

Tom Steyer unveiled a California plan to protect workers displaced by AI with good-paying jobs, benefits, and stronger safety nets.

The proposal would be funded by a tax on AI data processing, with money also supporting unemployment insurance, training, and apprenticeships.

Steyer also wants a new worker-protection agency to oversee the response to AI-driven job losses.

The plan could make California a national test case for taxing AI to cushion automation’s labor impact.
