How much longer can plants survive on Earth?

Researchers modeled rising solar luminosity and atmospheric CO2 to estimate when Earth’s plant biosphere could no longer survive.

Under weaker weathering, plants may persist for about 2 billion more years; stronger weathering could shorten that to roughly 1.35 to 1.86 billion years.

The study gives a timescale for when Earth may lose complex plant life and shift toward a microbe-dominated biosphere.

It highlights how climate and geochemical cycles will shape the planet’s future habitability.
