NHK Research Laboratories “slims down” VR goggles that are easier on the eyes, developing a new optical system that cuts thickness by 79%

NHK's Science and Technology Research Laboratories unveiled a slim light-field HMD for VR.

By placing a lens array and eyepiece in direct contact, the optical depth was cut from 49.5 mm to 10.5 mm, a 79% reduction.

The prototype combines a high-resolution microdisplay with ray tracing to deliver more natural 3D viewing and reduce eye strain during long sessions.

It will be exhibited at the 2026 lab open house starting May 28, with potential uses in education, medicine, and entertainment.
