Exceptional 500 medieval cannonballs discovered in Belgium stun archaeologists

Archaeologists in Nieuwpoort, Belgium uncovered medieval walls and floors during work on a new government building.

They also found a large cache of stone cannonballs, likely dating from about 1350 to 1600, linked to the city’s defenses.

An unexploded World War I shell was discovered as well and safely removed by DOVO.

The find underscores Nieuwpoort’s long military history and the value of construction-site excavations for heritage research.
