Scientists Destroy COVID and Flu Viruses in the Lab With Sound Waves

Researchers at the University of São Paulo found that high-frequency ultrasound can damage and inactivate influenza A and SARS-CoV-2 in lab tests.

In the experiments, MHz sound waves disrupted viral envelopes and sharply reduced SARS-CoV-2 infectivity in cell models.

The treatment left temperature, pH, and host cells largely unchanged under the tested conditions.

The results point to a potential non-drug way to disable some viruses, but more safety and effectiveness studies are needed.
