OpenAI’s next model is ‘Astra’ — solving an unsolved problem in mathematics

OpenAI said an internal version of its next major model, Astra, made progress on 10 long-standing open problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science.

The set spans fields including high-dimensional geometry, coding theory, algebraic circuit complexity, group theory, operator algebras, quantum complexity, and lattice cryptography.

Several of the problems had seen little or no progress for more than a decade, making the result especially notable.

The finding suggests AI may be becoming a more capable research partner for mathematicians and scientists.
