Scientists build first-of-its-kind robot to clean and inspect underwater bridge piles

UTS researchers and Transport NSW developed SPIR, an autonomous underwater robot for bridge pile cleaning and inspection.

The robot docks on bridge piles, removes marine growth with a high-pressure water jet, and captures geo-referenced 3D inspection data.

Successful trials in New South Wales showed it can create detailed maps for human assessment.

The system could reduce risky dive work, expand inspection coverage, and cut maintenance disruptions at bridges and ports.
