Trump admin makes sweeping request for medical records of federal workers

The Trump administration wants health insurers to provide medical records for federal workers, retirees, and their families.

OPM revealed the proposal in December in a short notice.

The agency said it is seeking service use and cost data.

The requested data would include medical claims, pharmacy claims, encounter data, and provider data.

The collection would affect more than 8 million Americans and 65 insurance companies; OPM says monthly collection is needed to oversee benefits programs and maintain competitive, quality, affordable plans, citing HIPAA authority.
