China's oldest 4,000-year-old pipeline network is revolutionary: they didn't need kings or nobles to build it

Archaeologists at Pingliangtai uncovered a 3,900–4,100-year-old two-tier rainwater drainage system of ceramic pipes and ditches.

The network was built to control monsoon flooding in a small walled settlement on the Huai River plain.

It is now considered the oldest complete urban drainage system known in China.

The find suggests major water-management projects could arise through local cooperation, not just centralized rulers, challenging older hydraulic-society theories.
