Government AI “Gennai” begins a pilot experiment for 180,000 employees across all ministries and agencies

Japan’s Digital Agency has expanded the government GenAI environment “Gennai” and launched a large-scale pilot in May.

About 100,000 government employees can use it now, with plans to roll it out across all ministries and agencies for roughly 180,000 users.

Gennai supports tasks like writing and translation, plus admin-focused functions such as legal research, Diet answer analysis, subsidy checks, and public-document proofreading.

The pilot will also test budget planning from FY2027 onward and procurement of domestic LLMs, aiming for safer, more efficient government use of AI.
