Oxford researchers say human right-handedness is best explained by combining brain size and bipedal walking in a primate evolution model.

The study suggests early hominins had only a mild hand preference, while right-handedness became much stronger in the genus Homo.

Humans’ strong right-hand bias may have emerged as upright walking freed the hands and later brain expansion reinforced lateralization.

The findings help answer a long-running question about why humans are far more right-handed than other primates.
