Eclipse Foundation offers enterprise-grade open source alternative to Microsoft’s VS Code Marketplace

The Eclipse Foundation launched Open VSX Managed Registry, its first foundation-operated managed service for critical developer infrastructure.

The service keeps Open VSX open to the community while adding enterprise features like uptime guarantees, support tiers, and operational assurances.

Open VSX already sees hundreds of millions of monthly downloads and has early customers including AWS, Google, and Cursor.

The move offers a vendor-neutral, reliable registry for VS Code-compatible extensions, reducing dependence on Microsoft’s marketplace.
