OpenAI kills its dedicated coding model Codex again, folding it into GPT-5.5

OpenAI has folded its standalone Codex coding line into GPT-5.5, ending separate Codex model releases again.

The company says GPT-5.5 improves autonomous coding and computer use, while using fewer tokens than GPT-5.4 on Codex tasks.

Despite the efficiency gains, GPT-5.5 comes with about a 20% API price increase.

The move continues Codex’s uneven history, after its 2023 shutdown and 2025 return as Codex-1 tied to agent software.

This reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy of consolidating specialized coding tools into its general-purpose models.
