Former Tencent generative AI chief Liu Wei said Chinese firms are still lagging the U.S. in real innovation, despite strong benchmark results.

He argued that LLMs alone are unlikely to create a durable competitive edge for China’s AI industry.

Liu has launched a new startup, Video Revers, and unveiled its AI video engine, Bach.

He said China should focus on areas where it has relative strengths, especially video generation and world models.
