China’s researchers unveil 2,372°F lithium battery ‘firewall’ to prevent EV fires

Researchers at Nanjing Tech University developed a flexible silica aerogel insulation sheet for lithium-ion batteries.

The material can withstand temperatures up to 2,372°F and slows heat transfer during thermal runaway.

An improved manufacturing process has scaled the material for possible use in commercial battery packs.

If adopted, it could help prevent EV battery fires from spreading without adding much weight.
