Scientists Detect Atmosphere on Planet-Like Object Beyond Pluto

Astronomers report a possible thin atmosphere around Kuiper Belt object 2002 XV93 after a stellar occultation.

A Japanese team saw starlight fade gradually, which they interpret as evidence of an atmosphere rather than a sharp edge.

They suggest the gas could come from cryovolcanic activity or a recent impact.

If confirmed, it would make 2002 XV93 only the second known trans-Neptunian object with an atmosphere after Pluto.
