OpenAI opens life sciences reasoning AI “GPT-Rosalind” to biodefense, amid concerns over dual-use risks

OpenAI launched “Rosalind Biodefense,” offering the GPT-Rosalind life sciences reasoning API free to vetted developers and select government and allied partners.

Access is limited to defensive uses such as epidemiological modeling and early detection of biological threats, with users screened through a Trusted Access Model.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory said they plan to use the system.

The move could strengthen biodefense, but it also raises fresh concerns about dual-use risks and potential misuse for bioweapons development.
