Monster Storms on Jupiter Unleash Lightning Beyond Anything on Earth

NASA’s Juno mission found that Jupiter’s lightning can be far more powerful than Earth’s, with some flashes estimated up to 100 times stronger.

Researchers used microwave radio measurements to study Jupiter’s storms and how they drive atmospheric convection.

The work, led by scientists including Michael Wong at UC Berkeley, improves understanding of Jupiter’s extreme weather and storm physics.

The findings also help scientists compare lightning and convection processes across planets, including weather relevant to Earth.
