A Dutch website has cataloged the world’s many plug types, highlighting how fragmented household power standards remain.

From 1880 to 1930, countries adopted their own electrical plug systems, and those early choices still shape travel and infrastructure costs today.

The IEC tried to create a universal standard in 1986 with IEC 60906-1, but global adoption never took hold.

A few countries, including Brazil and South Africa, adopted parts of the idea, while Switzerland and Liechtenstein kept their own systems under SN 441011.

The result is a world of adapters, incompatible outlets, and avoidable waste whenever governments consider changing standards.
