2,000-year-old Roman bread discovered at famous military camp in Switzerland

Archaeologists at Vindonissa in Windisch, Switzerland, identified a charred object as a 2,000-year-old Roman loaf of bread.

It is the first known Roman bread loaf found in Switzerland and came from the country’s earliest known military camp.

The excavation also uncovered fortification remains, weapons, and building structures tied to the Roman troop base.

Researchers say the rare organic find offers new insight into daily life at Vindonissa and early Roman history in the region.

The bread will be further analyzed in Vienna.
