Researchers built an early prototype that uses focused ultrasound to stimulate the olfactory bulb and evoke smell perceptions directly in the brain.

In early tests, participants reported odor-like sensations.

If it works reliably, the approach could add scent to VR and AR without chemicals or scent cartridges.

The method may also open new possibilities for non-invasive brain stimulation applications.
