Safari's Compact Tab Bar Is Back on Mac and iPad

Apple has restored Safari's Compact tab bar option in macOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4.

On Mac the Compact layout is enabled in Safari settings under Tabs → Tabs Layout → Compact.

On iPad the Compact Tab Bar can be turned on in Settings → Apps → Safari → Tabs → Compact Tab Bar.

The Compact layout merges the address bar and tab bar to save vertical space but truncates tab titles more aggressively.
