While we debate how much electricity AI needs, China already has a data center running on clean energy

China has launched its first AI data center powered entirely by clean energy in Ningxia, part of the national Eastern Data, Western Computing program.

The facility is expected to generate about 4.3 billion kWh a year, avoid roughly 3.65 million tons of CO2, and run with a PUE of 1.15.

The project highlights a viable path for greener AI infrastructure as power demand from data centers keeps rising.

It may also shape regulatory and industrial thinking in Europe and other regions facing similar energy and climate pressures.
