Germany turns parked EVs into floating power banks for electric ferry charging

A German university and ferry operator launched BIDI-EL to test vehicle-to-grid charging for the electric ferry Frisia E-I at Norddeich.

The pilot lets parked EVs and on-site solar panels feed power into ferry charging infrastructure, with funding from the DBU through January 2027.

The project treats EV batteries as distributed storage, aiming to cut fossil fuel use, integrate renewables, and ease pressure on the grid.
