Tesla told a senator that its robotaxis are sometimes driven remotely by human operators.

Tesla says remote operators can assume control as a final escalation and may drive up to 10 mph if software allows.

Competitors like Waymo say their humans provide context but do not remotely drive vehicles.

Tesla launched a limited robotaxi service in Austin in June 2025 and is reportedly testing rides without safety drivers.
