Volvo gets US government approval to bypass Chinese connected-car ban

The U.S. Commerce Department has told Volvo Cars it can keep importing connected vehicles despite new rules targeting Chinese-linked software and hardware.

The decision appears to give Volvo, which is partly owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding, an exemption from the planned restrictions.

The move offers temporary relief as the U.S. prepares a broader ban on connected-car technology tied to China starting with model year 2027.

It also signals that some automakers may still win carveouts from tougher China-related vehicle rules.
