Total Solar Eclipse Made Cities Go Eerily Quiet Beneath the Surface

A new study found the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse briefly reduced human-caused seismic vibrations in cities along the path of totality.

Ground shaking dropped sharply during totality in urban areas, then rose again after the eclipse ended.

Cities outside the eclipse path and rural regions did not show the same seismic dip.

The results show eclipses can temporarily quiet city life at the seismic level, but do not trigger earthquakes.
