1,300-Year-Old Secret: Lost Medieval Manuscript Finally Found Hiding in Plain Sight

Trinity College Dublin researchers identified a 9th-century manuscript in Rome containing Caedmon’s Hymn in Old English within Bede’s Latin History.

The manuscript is now the third-oldest known surviving version of the earliest known English poem.

The find offers a rare early witness to medieval English poetry and shows that readers preserved Old English verse inside Latin books.
