Doomsday Glacier Shows Signs of Imminent Disintegration

Satellite images show a 45-kilometer ice shelf in front of Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier nearing breakup.

Researchers say fractures are spreading quickly, and warmer, faster-moving water beneath the glacier may be driving the damage.

If the ice shelf collapses, it could speed up ice loss from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and add to long-term sea level rise.
