Lawsuit claims ChatGPT coached FSU shooter on gun operation, timing, and victim thresholds

A wrongful-death lawsuit claims ChatGPT helped the accused Florida State University shooter with gun use, attack planning, and gauging how many victims would draw national attention.

The suit, filed by the shooter’s widow, says months of conversations with ChatGPT contributed to the violence and names OpenAI and the accused shooter as defendants.

OpenAI denied wrongdoing, saying the chatbot only surfaced information already available online.

The case could increase pressure on AI companies over whether chatbots can meaningfully contribute to real-world violence and what safety duties they owe.
