One in Five at Risk: Scientists Identify a Hidden Blood Particle Linked to Higher Risk of Stroke and Death

A reanalysis of more than 20,000 participants from three NIH randomized trials found that high lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is linked to higher cardiovascular risk.

An Lp(a) level of 175 nmol/L or higher predicted more major cardiovascular events, with the strongest associations seen for stroke and cardiovascular death.

The risk was especially pronounced in people who already had heart disease, suggesting Lp(a) may help identify hidden risk beyond standard cholesterol testing.

The findings could improve screening and prevention by flagging patients who may need closer follow-up before serious events occur.
