Artemis II Becomes Humanity's Farthest-Ever Journey, Surpassing Apollo 13 Record

The Orion spacecraft reached 248,655 miles (≈400,000 km) from Earth on April 6 at 12:56 US Central Time (April 7, 2:56 Japan Time).

The mission set a new crewed-spaceflight distance record, surpassing the Apollo 13 mark.

Two lunar craters have been proposed to be named for the spacecraft 'Integrity' and Commander Wiseman's late wife, Carol; the names will be formally submitted to the International Astronomical Union.

Orion will perform a lunar flyby, coming within about 6,500 km of the Moon, observe an eclipse, and image lunar terrain with many high-resolution and handheld cameras before returning to Earth.

Collected data will support the Artemis program and lunar base development; splashdown is planned off San Diego on April 10 (local time).
