US Air Force to shortlist 6 companies for ‘loyal wingman’ combat drone program

The US Air Force is narrowing its Collaborative Combat Aircraft competition from nine companies to up to six finalists before prototype work begins.

The loyal wingman drone program is meant to support crewed fighters like the F-35 and future NGAD aircraft with autonomous combat aircraft.

The service is also pursuing propulsion options for future autonomous drones, signaling that engine choice remains a key program issue.

In parallel, the Air Force has begun work on a lower-cost Mass Modular Aircraft aimed at replacing the MQ-9A Reaper.
