The team delivered viral vectors carrying CARs via vascular injection to introduce CARs into brain astrocytes.

They designed CARs that enable astrocytes to find, uptake, and degrade Aβ; four CARs combined antibody components and phagocytic receptors.

Two effective CARs were tested in Alzheimer model mice; a single dose significantly reduced Aβ accumulation and neuronal damage after three months.

When given before plaque formation, the treatment prevented Aβ accumulation for 2.5 months; CAR-equipped astrocytes removed Aβ plaques.
