Satellite Internet “Amazon Leo” Mobile Communications to Be Deployed in 2028

Amazon has filed with the FCC for a major expansion of Amazon Leo, a low-Earth-orbit satellite network designed to connect directly to smartphones.

The plan targets up to 5,105 satellites and depends on Amazon's proposed acquisition and merger agreement with Globalstar, with deployment expected to begin in 2028.

The first-generation system is slated to start fixed broadband service in late 2026, while a separate D2D network would extend support to mobile devices.

Amazon is also eyeing broader device support, including Apple products, and deeper carrier partnerships, intensifying competition in satellite mobile communications.
