au Starlink Direct launches SOS center to handle emergency calls

KDDI launched the free “au Starlink Direct SOS” service on May 28 to proxy emergency calls via satellite communication.

Even outside au’s 5G/4G LTE coverage, users can send SOS details from supported apps when they can see the sky.

The information is sent through messaging apps to an SOS center, which can relay the report to police, fire services, or the coast guard.

The service aims to improve safety in remote areas and during disasters where mobile coverage is unavailable.
