Germany tests shape-shifting wings that morph mid-flight to boost flight safety

Researchers at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) tested shape-changing wings on the unmanned PROTEUS aircraft.

In morphAIR trials, they compared conventional wings with morphing wings that adjusted shape in flight.

The team used distributed actuators, pressure reconstruction sensors, and AI-assisted control to keep the aircraft stable.

The approach could improve safety, fault tolerance, and aerodynamic efficiency, especially in turbulence or failures.
