World First: Mitochondria From a Woman's Leg Were Injected Into Her Eyes

Doctors performed the first reported human mitochondria transplant for severe vision loss, injecting mitochondria from a woman’s leg muscle into the vitreous fluid of both eyes.

The experimental procedure appeared safe and showed possible signs of visual improvement, although it did not restore her vision.

The case suggests mitochondrial transplantation could help retinal ganglion cells and other damaged eye cells survive, offering a potential new path for optic nerve and retinal disease treatment.
