Musk mulled handing OpenAI to his children, Altman testifies

Sam Altman testified in Elon Musk’s lawsuit over OpenAI’s restructuring, rejecting claims that the company ‘stole a charity.’

Altman said Musk had once suggested OpenAI could pass to his children, and argued Musk’s approach to safety and management hurt the organization.

OpenAI board chair Bret Taylor said the nonprofit’s large asset base became usable only after the 2025 restructuring.

The case could help determine how OpenAI is governed and whether its nonprofit mission limits commercial expansion.
