Starting in May, pre-2013 Kindles won't be able to buy or download new books

On May 20, older Kindle e-readers and some 2011–2012 Kindle Fire tablets will lose the ability to buy or download books from the Kindle Store.

The change applies to devices introduced or sold in 2012 or earlier, going back to the original 2007 Kindle.

Amazon’s list of affected e-readers includes Kindle 1st Gen, Kindle 2nd Gen, Kindle DX, Kindle DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen.

Any books already downloaded to an affected device will remain readable on that device.

If an affected Kindle is reset to factory defaults it will no longer be able to sign back into an Amazon account; devices running software older than 5.12.2.2 also lose store and e-book library access.
