Scientists Discover New Giant Virus That Replicates in a Totally Unique Way

Researchers in Japan discovered furtivovirus, a new giant virus found in river water in Kamakura.

Its genetics place it between known giant virus groups, prompting a proposed new family, Manesviridae.

Unlike typical giant viruses, it breaks down the host nucleus membrane and replicates in the remaining nucleoplasm.

The finding may help explain giant virus evolution and possible links to the origin of the cell nucleus and complex life.
