Maine Governor Vetoes State Temporary Ban on New Large Data Centers

Maine Gov. Janet Mills vetoed a state moratorium on new data centers larger than 20 megawatts through October 2027.

She said the bill was too broad because it did not exempt an already underway $550 million redevelopment project at the former Androscoggin Mill in Jay.

Mills still backs a pause on new large projects and plans to create a council to study data centers' impacts.

The decision keeps Maine open to large AI infrastructure development while the state weighs effects on power, water, taxes, and local communities.
