In 1994, archaeologists discovered a 17th-century sunken ship with more than 400 gold coins. They have finally solved its great mystery

Archaeologists have identified a shipwreck found in Salcombe Bay, Devon, in 1994 as the Dutch merchant ship Dom van Keulen.

The vessel sank in 1633 after leaving Morocco with a valuable cargo, including thousands of gold coins and other goods.

The identification ends a 30-year mystery and was made possible by historical records in the British National Archives.

The find adds new insight into 17th-century trade, navigation, and the recovery of maritime treasure.
